I spent more than a decade on Shell drilling rigs. Two weeks on, two weeks off. Northern Alberta to the deepwater Gulf. Master’s in petroleum engineering, good paycheck, the whole thing I was supposed to want.
One Sunday night I was driving from Houston to a hotel in Houma, Louisiana, headed offshore for three or four weeks. We had just been through layoffs. The company cut 40 percent. I felt lucky to still have a job. That night I felt anything but lucky.
Two hours into the drive my wife Annie called. She asked how the drive was going, and then she told me what I had missed. When I pulled out, my six year old, Kolt, had chased the car. Two blocks. She caught up to him crying in the street. He was going to do anything to keep me home.
I gripped that steering wheel and I have never forgotten it. Nothing in my life was broken. From the outside everything looked fine. But I was driving away from the thing I was supposedly doing all of it for, over and over, every time I went to work.
I did not quit the next morning. That is the part most people get wrong about this.
In 2010 my parents co-signed my first house in Laramie and let me use $10,000 of what was left of my college savings. In 2015 I read Rich Dad Poor Dad. In 2016 Annie talked me into buying a Pure Barre studio in the middle of West Texas, which turned into seven franchises and an MBA on steroids.
In under five years we bought and sold more than 50 properties and 7 franchises. All of it while I was still clocking in at Shell.
I walked out in October 2022, a month before our fourth son was born.
Today we run acquisitions, construction, management, and capital across Wyoming and Montana. None of that is the point. The point is I coach my kids’ teams now. I am at the Tuesday game. That is what the portfolio bought.
Casey speaks to rooms of working professionals, operators, and families about building something that outlasts the job that funded it.

We buy the houses most investors drive past. An investor funds the renovation, our own crew does the work, and the house hits the market finished instead of half done. Investors get paid back first, then we split what is left.
We buy at around half of what the place is worth finished. The market can move against us and the deal still works.
